Artist Requirements

The Leather Trades Artist Lofts is committed to being a place where artists of all disciplines and workers from our area’s many arts and cultural organizations can create a focal point of creativity – a place to share ideas, artistic passion and energy. A place to LIVE, CREATE & CONNECT!

We define an artist as someone who is regularly engaged in an artistic discipline as a career or as a significant commitment in their life. Some examples would be:

  • Fine Artists: Painting, drawing, sculpture, book art, and print-making.
  • People who create imaginative works: Aesthetic literature, costume design, photography, music composition and architecture.
  • Functional & Craft Artists: Jewelry, rugs, decorative screens and grates, furniture, pottery, toys, and quilts.
  • Performers: Singers, musicians, dancers, actors, and performance artists.
  • Media Artists: Radio, film, television, multi-media, cyber-art and animation.
  • Design Artists: Graphic design, interior design and aesthetic product and package design and set design.

You do not have to make your living off the creation and sale of your work. We also recognize that there are many creative fields other than the ones listed above. If you’re curious, just call us and ask.

We define cultural workers as:

  1. Someone who works for an established arts organization, both non-profit and for-profit.
  2. Someone who works for an established non-profit arts service organizations.
  3. Consultants who have a history of work with established arts organizations, both non-profit and for-profit, or with established non-profit arts service organizations.

Arts service organizations include organizations providing arts-focused support to individual artists and arts organizations, foundations giving to the arts, and governmental units providing support and funding to individual artists and arts organizations.

One’s work within the cultural sector doesn’t necessarily have to be the main source of income for the individual or the family.

Application and selection are easy. You fill-out a short, half page questionnaire that describes your arts background. Then meet with a committee of your peers, share examples of your work, discuss your work and ask any questions that you have. We are happy to make accommodations for folks with access or transportation concerns.
